What I Learned In the Church Mom's Room (App-Free Step Tracker. Yes!)
June 15th. Before Church.
A lover of badges and stars on my chart, I was a prime candidate for a step counter. Except I wasn’t. Because regardless of how motivated I am by seeing progress in the form of numbers and symbols, I don’t have a smart phone. Anything that is app- reliant is dead to me. The graveyard of step trackers I decluttered last year affirm this statement. (Just two, but still.)
In order to keep my freedom and innocence, I have stayed faithful to my little flip phone, and shrugged off the temptation to know my activity levels for years.
I walked around my house like someone in the 1800’s . . . no idea how many steps I’ve taken. I slept and had no clue how well I slept (although the 12 night-time awakenings and bags under my eyes give some clue). I went for a run and had no idea how far I jogged, but I made peace with the fact that some data would never be mine.
Every once in awhile my curiosity got the best of me and I traced out a 5k route, utilizing our van pedometer and landmarks on the side of the road.
But that was the past.
No, I did not sell my soul to technology (that I know of).
